Nantucket derives its name from “Nantocke”, a Wampanoag tribal name provided by the predominant First Nations people who resided there before neighboring Martha’s Vineyard was purchased by Thomas Mayhew in 1642. Translated literally, the name means “faraway land or island”, a fitting title for an island located 30 miles off the coast.
